Can you hold cryptocurrency directly within a Stocks and Shares ISA, and if not what are the alternative ways to gain crypto exposure?

You cannot hold actual Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies directly in an ISA because crypto is not a qualifying investment under HMRC rules. However you can invest in crypto related exchange traded notes ETNs listed on a recognized stock exchange or buy shares in companies with significant crypto holdings, provided the ISA provider offers those instruments.

As of April 2026 the fintech platform stratiphy became one of the first providers to offer a practical solution for holding crypto ETNs within an Innovative finance ISA. Stratiphy partners with 21Shares to offer three specific ETNs covering bitcoin, ethereum, and a hybrid product combining bitcoin with gold . This is currently one of the only ready made routes for UK investors to gain direct crypto exposure inside a tax free wrapper though the IFISA itself is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme FSCS
