Hypothetically - what happens if you deposit too much into an ISA

1 day ago 2 replies 6

I recently moved my Cash ISA to Moneybox, I’d already added the £20k allowance via my previous provider and now Moneybox have a huge banner every time I open the app saying I’ve not deposited anything this tax year and I can deposit £20k. When I’ve moved previously the tax year status has always moved with it

Now I’m not going to do this, but what happens if you do?

HMRC would spot it after the tax year ends and have the excess (plus any interest on it) taken out of the ISA. That interest could then be taxable. For an honest mistake there’s usually no penalty, just the correction.

At the end of the tax year each ISA provider sends a report to HMRC with each customers’ subscriptions to their ISA. HMRC collate all this data and check every ISA holders’ subscriptions over all ISAs. They then write to the providers telling them how to correct the oversubscription.

A customer can aim for more lenient treatment by asking their providers and/or ISA to make the correction earlier.
