IG or OANDA for forex and CFDs?
This is the specialist against the generalist, and the twist is that they charge the same at the front door: both quote EUR/USD from 0.6 pips as of August 2026. From there they head in opposite directions. OANDA is forex-first, with around 1,700 CFD instruments but the fullest platform menu in this comparison, running MT4, MT5 and TradingView alongside its own OANDA Trade, plus the trading API that made its name with algo hobbyists. IG is the everything broker: 17,000+ markets, ProRealTime charting, OTC options, share dealing and spot crypto behind one login, with spread betting heritage going back to 1974. Pure forex tinkerers can be happy at OANDA. Everyone else, and anyone who might one day trade more than currencies, should start at IG.
A globally recognised industry leader. Access over 17,000 markets worldwide with spread betting, CFDs, and share dealing all from one account. New share dealing clients can claim a randomly allocated bundle of UK-listed shares worth between £40 and £300 by signing up with their promo code and investing £300 or more within 30 days.
Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work, and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
What does the forex specialist actually do better?
Three things, and they are real: platform choice, the API, and a single-minded focus on currencies that dates back to 1996. If your trading world is FX charts and nothing else, this section is OANDA's best pitch.
The widest platform menu here
OANDA UK lets you trade through its own OANDA Trade web and mobile platform, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 or TradingView, which is more third-party connectivity than IG offers. Anyone arriving with an existing MT4 expert advisor or a TradingView workflow can plug straight in. IG's stack is different rather than thinner: its own fast web platform with a published median execution of 85 milliseconds, plus ProRealTime professional charting free for anyone placing four or more trades a month. My honest read is that OANDA wins on plug-in flexibility and IG wins on the ceiling of what the tools can do. The currency range itself is a wash for most people: OANDA lists around 65 to 70 pairs across majors, minors and exotics per its UK pages in August 2026, and IG covers similar territory, so the pair you trade will almost certainly exist at both.
The API that built a following
OANDA's trading API is the reason many self-taught algorithmic traders opened their first account there: it is well documented, long established and designed to let you automate strategies against live and practice accounts. IG publishes a web API of its own, so automation is not exclusive to OANDA, but OANDA's developer community and documentation give it the edge for anyone whose plan is code-first trading in currencies. It is a niche advantage, and within that niche it is genuine.
Risk controls a forex house gets right
OANDA also publishes its margin mechanics plainly: retail accounts follow the standard FCA leverage caps, margin from 3.33% on major pairs, and positions are closed out automatically if account funds fall below 50% of the margin required, per its UK site in August 2026. IG runs equivalent FCA-mandated protections, including negative balance protection for retail clients, so neither firm leaves you owing more than your balance. The point is not that OANDA is safer, it is that a currencies-only shop documents this territory with a specialist's clarity.
Where does the generalist pull away?
Everywhere beyond currencies, and by an order of magnitude rather than a margin. The gap between 1,700 instruments and 17,000+ markets changes what an account can be for.
Ten times the markets, and sharper index pricing
OANDA's UK range covers forex, indices, commodities, metals, bonds and a set of US, UK and EU share CFDs, around 1,700 instruments in total per its site in August 2026. IG's 17,000+ markets swallow that whole and add thousands of global shares, more indices and niche markets OANDA does not touch. On cost, the FX door price is a dead heat at 0.6 pips on EUR/USD, but OANDA publishes no typical spread figures, so live quotes are worth watching, and on indices IG's published minimums are aggressive: 1 point on the FTSE 100, 0.4 on the US 500, 1.2 on the Germany 40 and 2.4 on Wall Street. Overnight costs are equally visible at IG, which prices funding from a single formula, an admin fee of 3.4% on spread bets or 3% on CFDs plus or minus the SONIA benchmark, around 3.73% in August 2026; OANDA applies financing per instrument, so position traders should compare their specific market rather than assume parity.
Spread betting heritage and the products around it
Both firms offer UK spread betting, which surprised me when I verified it: OANDA runs a tax-free spread betting sub-account usable through its platform, TradingView and MT4. The difference is centre of gravity. At OANDA, spread betting is a bolt-on to a forex CFD business; at IG it is the founding product, running since 1974 through IG Index (FCA reference 114059) across the full 17,000+ market range, with OTC daily, weekly and monthly options, share dealing and spot crypto on 150+ coins sitting alongside it in the same login. IG became a FTSE 100 company in March 2026, and the breadth of that product set is a large part of why.
How do they compare side by side?
Specialist and generalist, one row at a time, using each firm's published UK figures from August 2026.
| Axis | IG | OANDA |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD from | 0.6 pips | 0.6 pips |
| Markets | 17,000+ | 1,700+ CFD instruments |
| Third-party platforms | ProRealTime (free with 4+ trades/month) | MT4, MT5 and TradingView |
| Trading API | Web API available | The developer favourite, long-standing and well documented |
| Spread betting | Core product since 1974 | Offered as a sub-account |
| Options trading | OTC daily, weekly, monthly | Not offered |
Regulation, for completeness, is a tie worth having: IG Markets Ltd holds FCA reference 195355, OANDA Europe Ltd holds 542574, and eligible clients of both are covered by the FSCS up to 85,000 pounds. Corporate pedigree is a tie of a different flavour, a listed FTSE 100 firm founded in 1974 against a privately held forex house founded in 1996 that helped build online currency trading. I would open an account with either on trust grounds; the decision lives entirely in the rows above.
Which one should a UK trader pick?
Pick by trajectory, not by today. If you are a currencies-only trader who wants MT4 or MT5, or you intend to automate strategies through a mature API, OANDA is a perfectly respectable specialist home and its 0.6 pip EUR/USD floor matches the market leader. The specialist choice only goes wrong when the specialism stops fitting: the day you want to trade an individual share OANDA does not list, hedge with an option, or move a strategy into the spread betting wrapper at scale, you are opening a second account anyway. If there is any chance your trading grows beyond forex, and in my experience it almost always does, IG's 17,000+ markets, index pricing, options and heritage spread betting make it the account you choose once rather than twice. That is where my money is, literally: my diary of a first month day trading on IG is coming later this month on the blog.

FAQs
Is OANDA cheaper than IG for forex?
Not on the published minimums: both quote EUR/USD from 0.6 pips as of August 2026. OANDA does not publish typical spread figures, so compare live quotes at the times you actually trade. On index markets IG publishes some of the tightest minimums in the UK, including 0.4 points on the US 500.
Does OANDA offer spread betting in the UK?
Yes. OANDA UK offers a tax-free spread betting sub-account you can use through its own platform, TradingView and MT4, which its site confirmed in August 2026. IG remains the heritage provider, with spread betting as its founding product since 1974 across a far wider market range.
Which has more markets, IG or OANDA?
IG, by roughly ten to one: 17,000+ markets against the 1,700+ CFD instruments OANDA lists for UK clients. OANDA concentrates on forex with a supporting cast of indices, commodities, bonds and selected share CFDs, which is exactly what a specialist should look like.
Can I use MetaTrader or TradingView with each broker?
OANDA supports MT4, MT5 and TradingView alongside its own OANDA Trade platform, the broadest third-party line-up in this comparison. IG takes a different route: its own web platform plus professional-grade ProRealTime charting, free when you place four or more trades a month.
Are IG and OANDA both FCA regulated?
Yes. IG operates through IG Markets Ltd (FCA reference 195355) and IG Index Ltd (114059), while OANDA's UK business runs through OANDA Europe Ltd (FCA reference 542574). Eligible clients of both are protected by the FSCS up to 85,000 pounds.
