IG or Vantage for UK spread betting?
IG wins this one, though the challenger lands more clean punches than you might expect. IG invented retail spread betting in 1974 and still behaves like the firm that owns the format: every headline spread published, 17,000+ markets, ProRealTime for serious charting. Vantage, the trading name of FCA-authorised Vantage Global Prime LLP, attacks from below with a genuine £50 minimum for GBP accounts, a platform range that includes MT4, MT5 and TradingView where IG's spread betting offers none of them, insurance cover to £1 million above the standard FSCS limit, and no published inactivity fee against IG's £12 a month after two idle years. What Vantage does not do is tell you what its index or gold spreads are before you trade. For me that settles it, but the scorecard below is closer than IG would like.
A globally recognised industry leader. Access over 17,000 markets worldwide with spread betting, CFDs, and share dealing all from one account. New share dealing clients can claim a randomly allocated bundle of UK-listed shares worth between £40 and £300 by signing up with their promo code and investing £300 or more within 30 days.
Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 70% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work, and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
How does the veteran score against the challenger?
Four rounds to Vantage, three to IG, and the fight still goes to IG on the judges' cards because the rounds are not worth the same. That is the short version. A scorecard only works if each row is judged on merit rather than reputation, so here is the honest one, from both firms' own pages.
| Round | IG | Vantage | Goes to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum to start | Around £250 expected for card deposits | £50, and it really is £50 for GBP accounts | Vantage |
| Published pricing | EUR/USD 0.6, FTSE 100 from 1 point, spot gold 0.3, all on public rate cards | A forex table; nothing published for indices or gold | IG |
| Platform choice | Own platform, ProRealTime, L2 Dealer | MT4, MT5, TradingView plus its own app and web trader | Vantage |
| Market range | 17,000+ markets, weekend trading included | 900+ assets across forex, indices, shares and commodities | IG |
| Protection layer | FSCS up to £85,000 | FSCS plus Lloyd's of London excess insurance to £1 million | Vantage |
| Inactivity fee | £12 a month after 24 months without a trade | None published anywhere on its site | Vantage |
| Pedigree | Created the product in 1974, London-listed | 15 years by its own campaign count | IG |
Two of Vantage's rounds deserve a second look before anyone shouts upset. The £50 minimum is not the usual dollar figure dressed up for a UK page; Vantage's help centre states the minimum is 50 units of your account currency, so a GBP account genuinely starts at £50. And the pricing structure underneath is unusual for a spread betting brand: on Vantage's RAW account, EUR/USD prices from 0.0 pips with £1 per lot each way, £2 a round turn. That raw structure technically belongs to Vantage's CFD account menu, while the spread betting account itself advertises spread-only pricing with zero commission on selected contracts, so read the account pages carefully before assuming which costs apply to your bets.
What does each broker tell you before you trade?
IG tells you almost everything and Vantage tells you surprisingly little, and this is the gap that decides my verdict. Open IG's rate cards and the numbers sit in plain sight: EUR/USD from 0.6, FTSE 100 from 1 point in main hours, spot gold at 0.3, with per market pages for the rest of its range. You can price a year of your own trading before you deposit a pound.
Try the same exercise at Vantage. The forex spreads table is there, and on the RAW account it is a sharp read. Then you go looking for the UK 100 spread and find the instrument confirmed as available, in GBP, with no figure attached. I looked more than once. Gold is the same: XAUUSD is listed and marketed, the spread is not published anywhere on the site. You find out when you open the ticket. The Standard account adds its own wrinkle, quoting EUR/USD at around a pip or more, depending which of Vantage's own pages you read; the body copy, the accounts page and the spreads table each give a different number. None of this means the live pricing is bad. It means you cannot check it from the outside, and for an index and gold audience, which is most of UK spread betting, that is a real cost of choosing the challenger.
Is your money safer with the veteran or the challenger?
Both are FCA-regulated with FSCS cover, and on paper the challenger actually stacks the higher protection. IG runs UK spread bets through IG Index Ltd (FCA reference 114059) alongside IG Markets Ltd (195355); Vantage is a trading name of Vantage Global Prime LLP, FCA reference 590299. Eligible clients of either firm have FSCS protection up to £85,000. Vantage then adds a layer IG does not advertise: excess of FSCS insurance arranged with Lloyd's of London, covering eligible claims up to £1 million, with client funds held in segregated trust accounts at NatWest. An insurance policy is still only a promise, and IG's five decades of operating history behind a London-listed balance sheet is its own kind of security, but as a published protection stack the £1 million figure is Vantage's cleanest win on the whole card.
One practical note for anyone opening a Vantage account. The FCA has issued a warning about a clone firm imitating Vantage from a lookalike web address. It is not action against Vantage itself. The genuine UK business operates at vantagemarkets.co.uk under FRN 590299, so type that address yourself, check the FRN on the FCA register, and never follow a Vantage link from a cold message.
What would make me switch from IG to Vantage?
Three things would do it, and none of them has happened to me yet. First, if my workflow moved into MetaTrader or TradingView. IG offers neither MetaTrader version nor TradingView for UK spread betting, full stop; Vantage's platform range includes all three around its own app and web trader, and its new web platform is built on TradingView charts. For an EA builder or a chartist whose alerts, scripts and community all live in TradingView, that alone can settle the whole comparison. Second, if I were starting with a small pot. £50 against an expected £250 on a card deposit is the difference between trying spread betting this month and putting it off. Third, if I traded rarely. A dormant IG account starts costing £12 a month after two years; Vantage publishes no inactivity fee at all.
What keeps me at IG is everything the switch would give up. ProRealTime, £30 a month and waived whenever IG earns £15 or more from my trading in the month, does backtesting and screening that neither MetaTrader nor a standard TradingView plan matches. L2 Dealer offers direct market access for share traders. The market count is not close, 17,000+ against 900+, and IG's weekend index, gold and GBP/USD markets trade when Vantage's book is shut. Mostly, though, it is the transparency. I know what IG will charge me before I sit down. That is worth more than £200 of deposit flexibility to anyone who trades often enough for spreads to compound.
So which account should you open?
Open IG if you want to know your costs before you trade, and open Vantage if you need MetaTrader, TradingView or a £50 start more than you need a published rate card. The challenger is a more serious offer than its size suggests: FCA-authorised, insured beyond the FSCS to £1 million, cheap to enter, free to leave dormant, and plugged into the platforms most retail traders already use. But a spread betting firm that will not print its index and gold spreads is asking for trust it has not yet earned, while IG has spent half a century earning exactly that. Most readers should take the veteran and keep the challenger's tab open for the day their workflow outgrows IG's platform choices.

FAQs
Is Vantage regulated in the UK?
Yes. Vantage is a trading name of Vantage Global Prime LLP, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference number 590299. Note that the FCA has also warned about a clone firm imitating the brand, so only use vantagemarkets.co.uk and verify the FRN on the FCA register yourself.
Can I use MT4, MT5 or TradingView with each broker?
At Vantage, yes: its UK platform range covers MT4, MT5 and TradingView integration alongside its own app and web trader. IG offers none of the three for UK spread betting; its third-party platform is ProRealTime, with L2 Dealer for direct market access.
What is the minimum deposit at IG and Vantage?
Vantage's minimum is 50 units of your account currency, so £50 for a GBP account. IG publishes no universal minimum but expects around £250 for card deposits, with bank transfers more flexible. Check both figures on the brokers' funding pages before opening, as they do change.
Which has tighter spreads?
On EUR/USD, Vantage's RAW account prices from 0.0 pips plus £2 a round turn per lot, which beats IG's 0.6 for high-volume forex traders once the commission is costed in. On indices and gold there is no contest to score, because Vantage publishes no figures for either while IG lists the FTSE 100 from 1 point and spot gold at 0.3. IG wins on transparency; Vantage's raw forex pricing wins for the traders who can use it.
Does either broker charge an inactivity fee?
IG does, at £12 a month once your account has been inactive for 24 months. Vantage publishes no inactivity fee; its help centre says only that zero-balance accounts are archived after 90 days, with no charge stated.
Is spread betting tax-free with both?
Spread betting profits are currently free of UK capital gains tax and stamp duty for most retail clients at any FCA-regulated provider, IG and Vantage included. Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and UK tax law can change, so take independent advice if the tax angle is central to your plan.
