Quick Answer: Is XTB Good for Forex Trading?

Yes, and for a reason most forex reviews never mention: XTB is one of the few brokers where the money behind your trades is working too, earning 4% on GBP free funds while it waits as margin. Around it sits a genuinely strong manual trading setup: about 70 pairs, EUR/USD at 0.9 pips all-in with no commission, positions from 0.01 lots, no minimum deposit, and a platform in xStation 5 that new arrivals pick up in an afternoon. The one boundary to know is automation: there is no MT4, MT5 or retail API, so bots and Expert Advisors have no home here. For hands-on traders, that trade-off buys one of the cleanest forex accounts in the UK.

Everything in that table was checked against xtb.com on 26 August 2026, and the account itself was opened and tested in August 2026 with real money. The row I keep coming back to is the interest one. Forex traders habitually hold a cash buffer behind their margin, and at almost every CFD broker that buffer earns nothing. Here, £2,000 of standing buffer earns roughly £80 a year at the displayed rate, quietly refunding a season's worth of spreads for a smaller trader. Rates are variable, so check the current figure, but the principle is rare and welcome: this is a forex account that pays you to wait for your setup.

What Do the Costs Look Like Pair by Pair?

One number per trade, because the spread is the whole charge on forex CFDs. From our testing and XTB's published rates:

XTB forex costs by pair and position size
PairSpreadRound trip at 1.0 lotAt 0.01 lots
    EUR/USD0.9 pipsAbout £7About 7p
    GBP/USD0.9 pipsAbout £7About 7p

Holding overnight adds swap, as it does at every leveraged broker: EUR/USD ran at $7.55 per lot per night on longs in our testing. The nice touch is where XTB puts that information. Every ticket carries its own swap lines for long and short, so the overnight cost is in front of you at the moment you size the trade. Day traders in and out before the rollover never pay it at all. The wider spread story, including when variable spreads tighten and stretch, gets the full treatment on our XTB spreads page.

What Is xStation 5 Like for Currency Trading?

Quick, uncluttered and honestly a pleasure after years of MetaTrader's nineties furniture. Everything a currency trader touches repeatedly (the ticket, the watch, the chart timeframe switcher) sits one click from the chart, and the layout survives moving between desktop and mobile without rearranging itself. Charts respond instantly, stops and targets attach at the point of entry rather than as a second step, and the mobile app (4.7 on the App Store, 4.5 on Google Play) is good enough to manage a position properly rather than just stare at it. The market watch mixes your pairs with anything else you follow, which suits the trader whose EUR/USD view starts with what the US100 and gold are doing.

One platform is the whole story, though, and that carries a boundary worth stating plainly: there is no MT4, no MT5 and no retail API, so Expert Advisors, copy-trade bridges and Python bots cannot run here. XTB has clearly decided to build one excellent platform rather than maintain three average ones, and for manual traders I think that decision shows in the polish. If your edge lives in automation, our MT4 broker rankings are the right page; everyone else loses nothing.

How Quickly Can You Get Going?

Faster than any broker I can think of at this standard, because there is nothing to clear before you start:

Getting started with forex at XTB
    StepWhat I found
Opening the account8 minutes in our timed test, free, no minimum deposit
Trying the platformFree demo, available immediately
First live tradeFrom 0.01 lots, about 7p a round trip
Getting helpLive chat answered in under a minute in our test, support 24/5
Getting money out£500 card withdrawal arrived in 1 business day in our test, free

One honest note on the sign-up: expect the FCA-standard appropriateness questions about your trading experience, answered truthfully, because they decide which products open up to you. It is quick, and it is there for your benefit. The sensible path after that is demo first, then microlots, then size, and XTB removes the friction from every step of it. The demo carries no meaningful time pressure, so there is no rush to fund before you are ready. Leverage sits at the FCA's standard caps (30:1 on majors), negative balance protection is automatic, and the firm is FCA authorised under reference 522157. Nothing exotic, everything in order.

Is Your Money in Good Hands While You Trade?

Forex attracts more dubious operators than any other corner of retail trading, which makes XTB's credentials worth spelling out. The UK business is authorised and regulated by the FCA under firm reference 522157, retail accounts carry negative balance protection as standard, and logins are protected by two-factor authentication. Behind the UK entity sits a listed group with more than 20 years in the market and over 2.9 million clients worldwide, which is the kind of scale that tends to come with grown-up compliance rather than a postbox in an unusual jurisdiction.

None of that changes the risk of the product itself. Leveraged forex moves fast in both directions, and the FCA's leverage caps exist because most retail accounts lose money on CFDs. What the regulation does settle is counterparty risk: the broker side of the equation, at XTB, is about as solid as UK retail forex gets.

What Else Can You Trade From the Same Login?

Currency traders rarely stay currency-only forever, and this is where XTB quietly outgrows the specialist forex shops. The same account reaches 11,700+ instruments: 2,600+ CFDs across indices, commodities and shares for the trading side, and 9,100+ real stocks and ETFs for the investing side, with fractional dealing and a Stocks and Shares ISA available alongside. A EUR/USD trader who wants to hedge with gold, take a view on the US100, or quietly build a long-term ETF portfolio next to the trading account can do all of it without opening anything new.

That breadth is unusual in this segment. Most brokers with forex pricing this tight are trading-only products; most platforms with a proper ISA cannot price EUR/USD at 0.9 pips. Having both behind one login is a genuine point of difference, and it is why XTB features on our investing pages as well as the trading ones.

Who Gets the Most Out of XTB for Forex?

The manual trader, first and most obviously: one clear cost per trade, a platform that stays out of the way, and around 70 pairs covering everything short of frontier exotics. The careful starter, second: no minimum deposit, 7p microlot trades and an instant demo make this the cheapest serious way I know to move from practice to real money. And third, anyone who keeps meaningful cash behind their positions, because the 4% on idle GBP turns a dormant buffer into a small income stream.

Picture the typical fit: someone trading GBP/USD and EUR/USD a few evenings a week at 0.10 to 0.50 lots, chart open on the desktop, app on the phone for managing the stop, a four-figure balance earning interest between setups. That trader gets everything XTB does well and touches none of its boundaries.

Traders wanting the tax-free wrapper are the main group shopping elsewhere. Forex here is traded as CFDs only, and our spread betting comparison covers the brokers built around that wrapper instead. Automated traders have their answer above. Everyone in the wide middle of UK retail forex, trading majors by hand at sensible size, will find XTB fits like it was measured for them.

    What Didn't I Test?

I did not test every corner of the product. Our spread and swap figures centre on the majors during London hours; the exotic pairs and overnight sessions were outside the scope. Execution speed relies on XTB's own published figures (an 85ms median fill and a 4ms quote delay on EUR/USD) rather than our timed method, so I treat those as indicative. Interest rates, spreads and pair counts move, and every figure here was checked against xtb.com on 26 August 2026, with a monthly re-check scheduled.

    FAQs

How many currency pairs does XTB offer?

Around 70, covering every major, the minors worth trading and the more liquid exotics. The free demo shows the full list if your strategy needs a specific cross.

Can I use MT4 or MT5 for forex at XTB?

No. xStation 5 is the only platform, across desktop, web and mobile. There is no MetaTrader and no retail API for automated trading.

Can you spread bet on forex here?

No. Forex is traded as CFDs only. UK traders specifically wanting the tax-free wrapper need a different broker for it.

What leverage do you get on forex?

Up to 30:1 on major pairs, which is the FCA cap for UK retail clients rather than an XTB choice, with negative balance protection as standard.

Does XTB really pay interest while I trade?

Yes. GBP free funds earned 4.00% at the rate displayed on 26 August 2026, calculated daily and paid monthly. The rate is variable, so confirm the current figure on xtb.com.

How fast can I withdraw profits?

Quickly, in my experience: a £500 card withdrawal landed in 1 business day in our test, with no fee. Deposits are free too, whichever direction the money is moving.

What happens if a trade goes badly wrong?

Negative balance protection applies to UK retail accounts, so you cannot lose more than the funds on the account. Stops and take-profits attach at the point of entry, which keeps risk management a habit rather than an afterthought.
