Has City Index changed its name?

Yes. City Index became StoneX Trading on 12 September 2026. It is the same FCA-regulated company, StoneX Financial Ltd, with the same accounts, logins, platforms and support team. Existing clients did not need to do anything. The only things that changed are the name, the logo and the website address.

    City Index becomes StoneX Trading

City Index, one of the longest-running spread betting and CFD brokers in the UK, now trades as StoneX Trading. The City Index brand was retired on 12 September 2026 and the broker has taken the name of its parent company, StoneX Group Inc.

City Index was founded in 1983 and has been part of StoneX since the group bought GAIN Capital in 2020. StoneX Group is listed on Nasdaq (SNEX), sits in the Fortune 50 and has more than 100 years of history in financial markets. The rebrand brings the retail trading business under the same name as the rest of the group.

We have updated every page on The Investors Centre to reflect the change, including our full StoneX Trading review, which now carries a rating of 4.5 out of 5.

    What has not changed

For anyone with a City Index account, the practical answer is that very little is different.

    • The company. Accounts are still held with StoneX Financial Ltd, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 446717).
    • Your account and login. Account numbers, usernames, passwords, balances and open positions carried straight over.
    • The platforms. WebTrader, the mobile app, TradingView, MT4 and MT5 all work as they did before.
    • Client money protection. Funds are held in segregated accounts and eligible clients are covered by the FSCS up to £85,000.
    • Support. The same team is available 24 hours a day, five days a week, by phone, email and live chat.

If safety is your main question, we cover regulation and fund protection in more detail in our guide to whether StoneX Trading is safe.

    What has changed

The name, the logo and the web address. The broker now lives at stonex.com, and the website, WebTrader and the mobile app all carry StoneX Trading branding.

The product range is the same one City Index clients were already using: spread betting and CFDs on more than 13,500 markets, including 85 forex pairs, over 4,700 shares and more than 40 indices, plus options on over 40 markets.

What StoneX Trading offers UK traders

Pricing starts from 0.5 points on forex and 0.4 points on indices. The UK 100 has a fixed 1-point spread between 8am and 4.30pm, and spread bets on shares are commission-free. Guaranteed stops are only charged for if they are triggered.

WebTrader includes TradingView Pro charts and Performance Analytics, a tool that reviews your own trading history and shows where you tend to win and lose. Last year the broker won Best Spread Bet Broker and Best Trading App at the Good Money Guide Awards, and Best CFD Broker at the Professional Trader Awards.

It is not the right fit for everyone. There is no share dealing or ISA, and a £12 monthly inactivity fee applies after 12 months without a trade.

    Our view

Thomas Drury, founder of The Investors Centre, said: “City Index has been a familiar name to UK traders for more than 40 years, so a change like this is always going to raise questions. From what we have seen on our own account, it is the same broker with a new name: the same regulated company, the same platforms and the same pricing.”

    FAQ: the City Index rebrand

    Is City Index closing down?

Do I need to open a new account?

No. Existing City Index accounts moved across automatically. You log in with the same details and your balance and positions are unchanged.

Is StoneX Trading regulated in the UK?

Yes. StoneX Trading is a trading name of StoneX Financial Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 446717.

    Is my money still protected?

Yes. Client money is held in segregated accounts and eligible clients are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £85,000.

Has anything changed about spreads or fees?

The rebrand itself did not change pricing. Forex spreads start from 0.5 points, indices from 0.4 points, and the UK 100 has a fixed 1-point spread from 8am to 4.30pm.

    Who owns StoneX Trading?

StoneX Group Inc., a financial services company listed on Nasdaq under the ticker SNEX. City Index has been part of the group since 2020.
