What crypto can you buy on IG?
A list IG itself puts at more than 150 coins as of August 2026, and the useful way to read it is by category rather than by counting. At the centre sit Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana at 0% commission plus a 0.07% external exchange fee; around them sit the established large caps, a solid layer of DeFi and infrastructure tokens, and the major stablecoins, all at a flat 1.49%. What you will not find is the thousand-coin meme long tail or any staking and earn products. This is spot crypto with real beneficial ownership, no leverage, and, as on every platform anywhere, no FSCS cover on the coins themselves. Here is the range, category by category, and what each tier costs.
A globally recognised industry leader. Access over 17,000 markets worldwide with spread betting, CFDs, and share dealing all from one account. New share dealing clients can claim a randomly allocated bundle of UK-listed shares worth between £40 and £300 by signing up with their promo code and investing £300 or more within 30 days.
Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work, and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
How is IG's crypto range organised?
In four practical tiers, even though IG's own list is just one alphabetical market view. Once you sort the coins by what they are for, the shape of the offer becomes obvious: it is built around the assets most UK investors actually ask for, with the depth thinning deliberately as you move away from the centre. I have not reprinted the full list here because IG expands it regularly; the categories are the part that stays true.
The zero-commission trio: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana
These three are the reason most people open the account. They trade at 0% commission with only a 0.07% external exchange fee passed through from IG's liquidity partner, which works out at about 70 pence on a £1,000 purchase. Between them they cover the overwhelming majority of UK retail crypto demand by value, and IG has clearly priced them to be the cheapest route in.
The established large caps
Beyond the trio sit the familiar top-of-the-market names, with XRP and Dogecoin among the tokens IG also supports for inbound transfers. This tier is where the "more than 150" figure starts doing its work: recognisable projects with deep liquidity, priced at the flat 1.49% rate that applies outside the big three.
DeFi and infrastructure tokens
The list carries a meaningful layer of tokens that power things rather than just trade, with Chainlink and Avalanche among the names confirmed on the platform via the transfer list. If your interest in crypto is the plumbing, oracles, layer 1 chains, decentralised exchange tokens, IG's coverage of the established names here is respectable, though a dedicated exchange will always go deeper into the experimental end.
Stablecoins
The major dollar-pegged stablecoins round out the range. On a spot platform without staking they are less a trading asset than a parking mechanism, and since IG lets you hold pounds in your dealing account for free, most UK users will touch them only when moving value between coins. Check the live list for exactly which are supported before you plan around one.
What can you not buy on IG?
The meme long tail, and anything that pays a yield. Knowing what is absent matters as much as the count, because it defines who the account is for.
The meme-coin long tail
Dogecoin, the original meme coin, is listed. The thousands of micro-cap tokens behind it are not, and that is a design decision rather than a gap IG is racing to close. If your strategy involves catching newly launched tokens in their first week, you need a dedicated exchange and a tolerance for what happens on them. IG's list is curated, which cuts both ways: less lottery, less choice.
Staking, earn and leverage
There are no staking or earn products on the account, so coins sit in custody without generating yield. It is also spot only: you buy coins outright with money you have, there is no leverage on the crypto account, and execution is currently at the live market price when you confirm. For the mechanics of an actual purchase, my step-by-step walkthrough of buying Bitcoin on IG covers every screen.
Which coins can you transfer in from elsewhere?
Around 20 of them, and if you already hold crypto on another exchange or in your own wallet, this subset matters more than the headline range. IG supports inbound transfers for a group of major tokens including BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, LINK and AVAX, handled on the web platform. Buy something outside that group on IG and it is IG-only for now: you can sell it back to pounds whenever you like, but you cannot deposit more of it from elsewhere. Transfers out to external wallets are not yet live at all, which is the single biggest caveat on the whole account, and I have covered the practicalities, including a walkthrough of an inbound transfer, in my guide to IG crypto transfers.
What does the range cost to trade?
Two tiers, one rule: which tier your coin sits in is the entire fee schedule, and the gap between the tiers is the most important number on this page.
| Tier | Dealing cost | On £1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana | 0% commission + 0.07% external exchange fee | About 70p |
| Every other listed coin | Flat 1.49%, covering buying, selling and swapping | £14.90 |
That is a twenty-fold difference, so the honest summary is that IG has priced the majors to compete with anyone and priced the rest for convenience. Deposits by bank transfer are free, withdrawing your pounds costs nothing, and there are no account fees on the crypto account. I have pulled the whole structure apart, including what "0% commission" does and does not mean, in my analysis of IG's crypto fees, so this page keeps to the recap.
Is IG's range enough?
For most UK investors adding crypto alongside existing investments, yes, comfortably. The trio covers the core cheaply, the large caps and infrastructure names cover diversification, and the absences, meme launches and yield products, are absences most long-term holders will never feel. Two practical notes before you act on any of it: opening the crypto account involves a short appropriateness quiz about your crypto knowledge and then a 24-hour wait before you can trade, so plan a day ahead rather than an hour. And whatever you buy, cryptoassets are not covered by the FSCS on any platform, so the regulated firm around the account does not soften the asset inside it. If the shape of the range suits you, the full IG review covers everything around it.
FAQs
How many cryptocurrencies does IG offer?
IG's own pages put the list at more than 150 coins as of August 2026, and it expands regularly, so treat any precise count as out of date the day it is printed. The structure matters more than the number: Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana at 0% commission plus 0.07%, everything else at a flat 1.49%.
Does IG have meme coins?
Dogecoin is listed, and it is also one of the tokens supported for inbound transfers. The deep meme long tail of newly launched micro-cap tokens is not on the platform, and IG shows no sign of chasing it. For that end of the market you need a dedicated exchange.
Can you stake crypto on IG?
No. There are no staking, earn or yield products on IG's spot crypto account, so coins sit in custody without generating income. If earning yield on holdings is central to your strategy, IG is not built for it; the account is designed for buying, holding and swapping.
Is IG crypto spot or CFD?
The crypto account is spot: you take beneficial ownership of real coins held with IG's institutional custody partner, there is no leverage, and nothing on the account is a derivative tracking a price. It sits in its own account inside My IG, separate from IG's spread betting and CFD business.
Is crypto on IG protected by the FSCS?
No, and that is true of every platform, not a mark against IG. Cryptoassets sit outside FSCS compensation entirely. IG is an FCA-authorised broker and joined the FCA's cryptoasset register in October 2025, which tells you about the firm's standing; it does not insure the price of anything you buy.
