Quick Answer: Should You Spread Bet Here?
For index, forex and commodity spread betting, yes, and for one reason above the rest: you get fixed point spreads to a published timetable (their own market information sheet lists the UK 100 at 0.8 points through cash hours and the US 500 at 0.4 through the US session), and they held steady when I traded through scheduled news. Add stakes from 10p a point on my account, no commission and no deposit or withdrawal fees, and the cost side of spread betting becomes unusually easy to reason about. The fit is a trader who already knows what a stop and a point are; complete beginners will find gentler starting places, and anyone wanting real shares in an ISA is shopping in the wrong aisle entirely.
Tested on a real funded account; figures re-checked August 2026. Full breakdown: Trade Nation review.
Trade Nation is the only broker we have tested that fixes its spreads, and in our testing they held: EUR/USD stayed at its published 0.5 pips through an NFP release and GBP/USD held its published 0.8 through a Bank of England decision, with zero requotes logged. Pair that with a first-class TradingView integration and you have a setup for traders who want to know the cost before they click. Spread betting and CFDs only, so no ISA, no real shares and no MT5.
Financial Spread Bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 73.7% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
What Does the Spread Betting Account Look Like?
Opening one is quick; I recorded my own sign-up and had a funded spread betting account (plus a CFD account alongside it) inside twenty minutes. You then trade 1,000+ markets, spanning forex, 40 indices, hundreds of share prices and the major commodities, staking pounds per point the way UK spread bettors always have.
The pricing is where it stops looking like everyone else. Most spread betting firms quote spreads that widen when markets move. Trade Nation fixes them to a published timetable: the UK 100 is 0.8 points right through cash-market hours on their own market information sheet, with set wider bands overnight, and when I sat on the quotes through an NFP release and a Bank of England decision they did not move at all. For a spread bettor, that means the cost column in your journal is a known number rather than a guess.
What Does Spread Betting Cost at Trade Nation?
| Cost | What I found |
|---|---|
| UK 100 spread | 0.8 points fixed, 08:00–16:29 (published wider bands outside cash hours) |
| US 500 spread | 0.4 points fixed during the US session |
| Germany 40 spread | 1 point fixed, 08:00–16:29 |
| Gold spread | 4 fixed on the per-0.1 contract |
| Brent Crude spread | 4 fixed, one band around the clock |
| Commission | £0 (everything is in the spread) |
| Minimum stake | 10p a point on my account |
| Deposit / withdrawal fees | £0; my latest test withdrawal was approved in 1 hour 2 minutes (earlier tests cleared in 2 days) |
| Overnight funding | Rate differential + 2.5% annualised (3% commodities) on positions held past the New York close |
| Guaranteed stop-loss | Premium applies; minimum distances published per market on their market information sheet |
Spread figures are Trade Nation's own published main-session rates from their market information sheet, re-checked 24 August 2026; each market's full band timetable is on the sheet. Fees and withdrawal times are from my own account testing.
The one cost that deserves respect is overnight funding. Spread betting a leveraged index position and holding it for weeks quietly bleeds carry, at Trade Nation as at every leveraged broker. Day and swing traders barely notice it; buy-and-hold instincts get punished by it. If your horizon is months, you want an investment account rather than a spread bet, and our investment platform rankings are the better read.
Is Spread Betting Really Tax-Free?
Spread betting profits are currently free of Capital Gains Tax and stamp duty for UK retail speculators, which is the reason the product exists in the UK at all (tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change). That perk is identical at every UK spread betting firm, so it is not a reason to pick Trade Nation specifically. The combination is the argument: the tax wrapper everyone offers, plus the fixed costs almost nobody does. A news trader who wants CGT-free index exposure with a known cost per trade is the exact person this account was built for.
What Is It Like to Actually Place a Spread Bet?
You choose your route at sign-up. TN Trader, the in-house platform, runs on desktop, web and mobile and keeps things deliberately simple: chart, watchlist, calendar, twice-daily market recaps, ticket. My preference, and the setup in my screenshots, is connecting the account to TradingView, where Trade Nation sits as a featured Platinum broker rated 4.8. Full professional charting on top, fixed spread betting account underneath, order tickets straight off the chart.
We tested the indices and they held as advertised. One routing note: MT4 is available too, but MT4 accounts run variable spreads, so spread bettors chasing the fixed pricing should stay on TN Trader or TradingView. I unpack the whole pricing model, including what we measured through three news events, in Trade Nation fixed spreads: do they really stay fixed?
My Verdict for Spread Bettors
Good, and for the news-and-events crowd, quietly excellent. Spreads that held right through announcements when I tested them, 10p stakes for sizing up gradually, no fee clutter, a £10,000 demo that does not expire, and FCA regulation with negative balance protection underneath it all. The reservations are the ones I gave in the main review: it rewards traders who already know their way around a chart rather than complete beginners, there is no MT5, and there is no share dealing or ISA, because this is a trading product through and through.
If that reads like you, it is one of the most rational homes for a UK spread betting account right now. If you are choosing your very first platform, start gentler with Capital.com and come back when cost certainty starts to matter to your strategy.

FAQs
What is the minimum stake for spread betting on Trade Nation?
Stakes on my account started at 10p a point (you can see the 0.1 stake in my order tickets), and the minimum deposit is effectively zero, between £0.01 and £5 depending on payment method by their own terms. Realistically, allow £100 or so to margin even a small index position sensibly, and note the £50 minimum withdrawal.
Is spread betting on Trade Nation tax-free?
Spread betting profits are currently free of Capital Gains Tax and stamp duty for UK retail speculators, at Trade Nation as at any UK spread betting provider; tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change. Losses are correspondingly not deductible, and the standard risk warning applies: 73.7% of retail investor accounts lose money trading CFDs with this provider.
Can I practise before betting real money?
Yes: the demo account comes loaded with £10,000 of virtual funds and had no stated expiry when I checked. Pair that with 10p live stakes afterwards and you can scale from practice to real exposure about as gradually as the industry allows.
Does Trade Nation offer guaranteed stops on spread bets?
Guaranteed stop-loss orders carry a premium where offered; standard stops and take-profits are free and sat directly in my order tickets. Retail accounts also have negative balance protection under FCA rules, so you cannot lose more than the funds in your account.
Trade Nation vs Spreadex for spread betting: which is better?
They solve different problems. Spreadex bundles financial spread betting with a sports book and a longer market list in some areas; Trade Nation's edge is pricing structure, fixed spreads that held through news when I tested them, with a modern TradingView route on top. For cost-predictable index and forex betting, I would take Trade Nation; the full comparison lives in our Trade Nation review.
